This New Orleans classic is said to be the very first cocktail; it was invented in the Hotel Roosevelt (formerly the Grunewald, the Roosevelt, the Fairmont and now the Roosevelt again) at the Sazerac Bar, which still serves some of the best drinks in the city:
1 tsp simple syrup
3-4 dashes bitters
2 ounces rye whiskey
1/4 tsp Absinthe
Strip of lemon peel
Stir ingredients vigorously - do not shake; serve with ice cubes.
Makes 1 cocktail.
