Human beings need to give charity in order to be happy. Expecting government to provide all social services and assistance robs those who are economically stable of the opportunity to help others and risks being inefficient, cold and even immoral. We must maximize a system most respectful of our God-given creative freedom and which allows us to meet the basic needs of our brothers and sisters.

Unexpected Meditation XX
Many of the happiest moments in our lives are experienced when we are not doing just what we wanted to do. This tells us that happiness or salvation or whatever we want to call it comes to us not as a result of our efforts so much, but as gifts, ours to be sure, but gifts still.
