Okay: those of you that know me know I do not mean the title of this post to be taken literally. It's really just an opportunity to poke fun using Scottish parochialism:
Hume is not, as so many seem to think, the world's greatest philosopher, not even perhaps Scotland's greatest philosopher. If we can accept the plausible hypothesis that Duns Scotus was indeed born in Duns, we can argue that Hume is probably no more than Berwickshire's second greatest philosopher.
Unfortunately, this means that most all of modern Western philosophy (and, consequently, law, ethics, culture, literature, the arts, etc.) is deeply influenced by the thought of nothing more than the second greatest philosopher of Berwickshire: not exactly a bragging point.
My wife tells me no one other than a philosopher would find the humor in the above. Why is that I wonder?
