A view of what remains of some statues in the Cathedral of Saint Martin (founded around 600 under the patronage of the Merovingians), in Utrecht, after they were attacked by Calvinist iconoclasts in the 16th century. Note the faces - er, lack thereof. Fortunately, this sort of thing rarely happens anymore. Instead of religious iconoclasts, damage is done to ancient religious structures more often than not by those who describe themselves as "merely" politically motivated. Apparently, our contemporaries can make distinctions for themselves for which they believe our ancestors were incapable.
