Reverence is a precondition for the possibility of metaphysics; but it is poverty that grounds reverence. What this implies is that a true metaphysics cannot be known, except insofar as one is a person of prayer: that is, a person receptive of Being. This is the first and perhaps richest philosophical lesson I learned from Fr. Marie-Dominique Philippe, o.p. In honor of the many ways in which he has touched my heart, I ask you to please pray with me for the repose of his soul: Fr. Philippe returned to God on Saturday, August 26, 2006. His funeral mass can be viewed here.
